Guest Stage Manager (2015)

Ruth E. Kramer is originally from Detroit. Her love for theatre dates back to elementary school, where one of her teachers was the late Catherine C. Blackwell. Taking theatre classes at the Detroit Institute of Arts and seeing many shows as a child, cemented her passion for performing.  While at Michigan State University (Class of 1977) her focus changed to Stage Management at the suggestion of a fellow student, still a lifelong friend. Early training in MI included the Rosier Players Old Time Tent Show, the long gone Black Sheep Repertory Theatre in Manchester, and several seasons at Tibbits Sumer Theatre in Coldwater.  Upon moving to NYC in 1978, she found day work as a telephone answering service operator, and stage managed Off-Off Broadway “showcases” (unpaid opportunities) at night. Three years of touring the US, Europe, and landing at a Broadway theatre as the ASM for the dance company PILOBOLUS followed, with summer stock gigs in the off-seasons. In 1983 she was offered an Actors’ Equity Association contract, and has been a proud member for 32 years.

Next, she toured with Theatreworks/USA, a Theatre for Young Audiences company, eventually graduating into directing 13 tours for them, worked on NYC “Mini contracts” and transitioned into regional theatre Stage Management positions. She is most proud of her 18 year, 34 show, continuing relationship with the Pittsburgh Public Theater where she will be employed again this season. Other credits include the Off-Broadway productions of ANNE OF GREEN GABLES and TOVAH: OUT OF HER MIND, six seasons at Maine State Music Theatre, six at Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown. PA, and stints at Alpine Theatre Project, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Riverside Theatre of Vero Beach, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Pioneer Theatre Company, Goodspeed-at-Chester, Great Lakes Theater Festival, New Jersey Shakespeare Festival, Ogunquit Playhouse, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and Trinity Repertory Company.

In her commitment to mentoring future Stage Managers, Ms. Kramer is responsible for creating and hosting the Stage Manager New Member Reception for AEA, has participated in the Stage Manager Mentoring Project for USITT, and regularly addresses non-union actors and stage managers, most recently at Carnegie-Mellon and Point Park University, and in any workplace where they are her colleagues.

Ms. Kramer has worked in 41 states, lives in Manhattan Plaza, a subsidized community for performing artists in Hell’s Kitchen NYC, is an avid Geocacher, and is proudly serving her third term as an elected leader on the National Council of Actors’ Equity Association.
