CREATE! Micro-Grant 2021 Winners Announced

Twelve student projects were selected to each receive $500 CREATE! Micro-Grants to respond critically and imaginatively to events occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the funding, micro-grant winners will craft a variety of works using creative mediums such as film, dance, poetry, song, and oil painting to tackle issues involving race, isolation, body image, language, and more.

MSU Survey Asks for Your Stories of Creativity in the Time of COVID-19

“Creativity in the Time of COVID-19,” an MSU project funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, asks the public to share their stories about the role creativity has played in their lives during the pandemic as well as any creative works they’ve made that have helped them get through this past year.

Alum Named GM for Global Entertainment Media Brand

History and Theatre alumna Geneva S. Thomas recently became the General Manager of Entertainment Weekly and People en Español under the Meredith Corporation, which is one of the world’s leading entertainment media brands, and she credits her MSU education for helping prepare her for the work she does today. She especially gives thanks for the opportunities she had as a student leader.

Theatre Students Develop Anthology of Audio Plays to Evoke Conversations Around Social Justice Issues

A group of Michigan State University Department of Theatre students created a series of new audio plays, each connected to themes of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). All five “Audio Anthology” plays, along with a student-produced documentary short, are now available online at theatre.marcom.cal.msu.edu/dei_audio.

Theatre Student’s Drag Queen Web Series Uses Costume Design to Examine Current Events

When the Michigan State University Department of Theatre’s productions for the Fall 2020 semester were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a call went out to all faculty and students for ideas focused on themes of diversity, equity, and inclusion. First-year MFA Design Candidate Zech Saenz, who specializes in costume design, pitched a project addressing the pandemic through the lens of drag queens and comedy. The result is a three-episode web series, called Grads in Drag, which is now available for streaming on-demand.
