MFA Theatre Candidate to Help Transform Beaumont Tower with Animated Projections for Halloween

Michigan State University’s Beaumont Tower will transform into a canvas of light, animation, and music as the Halloween carillon concert returns for the second consecutive year with a new collection of haunting melodies and large-scale animated projections. The event, “The Ringing 3: Music for All Hallows Eve,” will take place Thursday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

This year’s animated projections are being engineered by Luis Guzman, MFA Candidate in Theatre Design, with support from Alison Dobbins, a former Professor in MSU’s Department of Theatre who is now Professor and Chair of Music, Theatre, and Dance at Christopher Newport University.

University Carillonist Jon Lehrer will present a program of eerie favorites, ranging from classical compositions by Saint-Saëns to modern film scores, accompanied by large-scale animated projections that transform Beaumont Tower into a striking display of light and imagery.

The program will unfold through eight themed chapters, from “Night Falls” and “Undead Rising” to “Back to Life” and “Last Dance,” with projected visuals bringing each chapter to life.

Audiences will experience haunting and familiar melodies from works such as “The Bells of Notre Dame,” Mozart’s “Lacrimosa,” Saint-Saëns’ “Danse macabre,” and selections from the films “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Howl’s Moving Castle,” as well as the whimsical “Pure Imagination” from “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.”

Original carillon compositions and other unexpected musical selections will fill the air with sounds that are mysterious, imaginative, eerie, and fun. Meanwhile, large-scale projections created by students and professionals in animation and special effects will illuminate Beaumont Tower, adding a visual dimension to the music played on its 49-bell carillon.
