RESOURCES

Antigone, written by Sophocles around 441 BC, opens in the aftermath of the civil war in Thebes. Oedipus’s sons, Eteocles and Polyneices, have killed each other in battle. While Eteocles is honored as a defender of the city, Polyneices is branded a traitor. Creon, taking power as the new ruler of Thebes, rules that Eteocles receive a proper burial, whereas Polyneices’s body must be left to rot in the open. Antigone, sister to the brothers, defies Creon by demanding a burial for Polyneices. This creates an intense conflict between individual values and state authority. Emily Mann’s 2005 adaptation retains this classic storyline while introducing contemporary dialogue and a chorus that actively questions the motives and judgments of the characters.

Centuries after its creation, Antigone remains a timeless classic that demands to be read and retold. Its central themes resonate deeply in contemporary society, particularly in how it examines the tragic aftermath of civil war and the ethical limits of violence. Sophocles’ text reminds us that even in conflict, humanity must not humiliate the dead. The play continues to challenge us to examine the tension between human law and divine law, as well as the fundamental responsibilities of an individual over the state. As you watch this production of Antigone, consider how these themes are present in our current world and how they challenge us.

– Ashley Romo, Assistant Director & Dramaturg of Antigone

Sophocles (Author) wrote plays that were usually filled with big mistakes, hubris, and family drama. He served as an Athenian leader, city treasurer, and military general. He revolutionized drama by introducing a third actor to allow for complex three-way arguments on stage. Over his lifetime, he wrote 123 plays, including Oedipus Rex and Antigone, and won top festival honors at least 24 times. Legend says he passed away from choking on a grape, straining his voice during a speech, or dying of pure joy after a dramatic victory.

Emily Mann (Adapter) is a Tony Award-winning playwright, director, and Theater Hall of Fame inductee who led the McCarter Theatre Center for 30 seasons. She is well known for groundbreaking dramas like Having Our Say. Her 2005 adaptation of Antigone cuts away old-school language to make Sophocles’ debate on state power vs. individual conscience easier to understand. Because she believes ancient choruses shouldn’t just sing background music, she updated her adaptation to actively challenge the characters on stage.

Sophocles’ Antigone is my favorite ancient Greek tragedy, and one of my favorite plays, because it raises profound moral and ethical questions without offering clear-cut answers. By modern standards, Antigone is widely considered a heroine and Creon a tyrant. Yet each time I read or teach Antigone, I struggle and fail to decide who is the protagonist and who is the antagonist. Both Creon and Antigone are driven by what they believe is right and intractable. Yet despite their contrasting viewpoints, it is difficult to totally dismiss, champion, or villainize either given what is at stake for them individually and nationally. Their own inability to compromise or consider the other’s position is the source of their tragic ends. Yet there are far larger implications in Creon’s refusal to really listen to Antigone’s side and in mistaking his power for wisdom. As ruler, Creon’s pride, his misguided sense that yielding is a sign of weakness, will ultimately end the people of Thebes’ chance for true peace. War will resume bringing needless loss, destruction, and lasting grief. By creating equally strong, sympathetic, and imperfect opposing figures – both right, both wrong – Sophocles humanizes the impact of politics and asks audiences to see the humanity in their enemies.

Though written twenty years ago, much like the original, Emily Mann’s adaptation of Antigone still speaks to our contemporary moment. Whether this is due to the relationship of current global, political conflicts to previous ones is for audiences to decide. I chose this version for how Mann captures Teiresias’ prophecy for Creon: “Unless one of you stops, unless one of you breaks your deathly grip, unbending as you both are, you both will perish. And you will bring everything and everyone down around you.”

– Ann Folio White, director of Antigone
