Taking Off! is a fast-paced musical comedy set in 1964, featuring stories of flirtation, romantic embraces, references to mature seduction (no nudity), and high-flying hi-jinx! The story also reflects some of the outdated (and often sexist) rules once placed on women in the airline industry, presented with a critical and comedic lens.
Contains sounds and miming of vomiting. Recommended for teen and adult audiences.

Taking Off! is a musical comedy set aboard a turbulent 1960s Panamorama Airlines flight, where an ambitious female mechanic, Amelia Darehart, trades her toolbox for a stewardess uniform—only to discover the role isn’t as glamorous as it seems. Between spilled drinks, a diamond heist gone wrong, and a dream ballet filled with terrible dancers, Amelia navigates love, ambition, and the absurd rules placed on women of the era. With high-flying hijinks and heart, Taking Off! explores the push and pull between freedom and societal expectations—all at 35,000 feet. A unique educational collaboration between Michigan State University Department of Theatre and the Institute for Arts & Creativity at Wharton Center.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Welcome to the Pasant Theatre at Michigan State University, and thank you for joining us for the 12th installment of the New Musical Laboratory (NML), a partnership between the Department of Theatre and Wharton Center for Performing Arts.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the NML, a program that each year selects one new musical in development to be workshopped and staged through an intensive three-week rehearsal process. We are thrilled to present Taking Off! by Sonya Hayden and Matt Lowy, making its first fully staged appearance here at MSU.

Taking Off! began in Lincoln Center Performing Arts Library’s incubator program “Across a Crowded Room”, where Sonya, Matt, and Rachel Sklar were challenged to create a 20-minute musical. Their piece imagined the story of April, the stewardess who missed her flight to Barcelona in Stephen Sondheim’s Company. Over time, that idea grew into the full musical you’ll see today—now with a flight bound for Paris.

The writers initially submitted this show for our 2024 program and from the first read and listen, I was a fan of the musical. The music was complex with elements of jazz, classical and contemporary musical theatre and the script was very funny. We spoke throughout the year about the possibilities that this show has which led to it being selected as the 2025 NML project.  As part of the development process and program, we paired the team with professional dramaturg, Molly Marinik, who has been working with the team all summer; this led to 3 rewrites and a new song. Throughout history, musical comedy has provided laughter and joy during difficult times, and I think now more than ever we need musicals like
Taking Off! to bring us together.

Set in 1964, we experience the bustling male-dominant world of aviation and timeless themes of feminism and the fight for gender equality in the workplace. Amidst adversity, these women find strength in each other, forming an unlikely alliance that defies societal norms and empowers them to take control of their destinies.

You are about to witness a collection of fully staged scenes and songs, brand new pieces read with scripts in hand, and potentially some material at music stands. You get to truly experience a new musical workshop environment.  You get the first glimpse of a musical that we confidently feel will be gracing many other stages in the near future. The cast’s work over the past three weeks has already influenced the future of this show, and your presence tonight makes you part of its journey as well. Please enjoy Taking Off!.
