APRIL 11 - 19, 2025

Pasant Theatre, Wharton Center

Director: Ji Won Jeon

Run time: 2 hours, 15 minutes

(10 min intermission)

SUMMARY

Where is this unbearable itching coming from? Inspired by 18th-century Korean philosopher Yeon-Ahm’s quest for a new perspective that would move forward a nation, Inching Towards Yeolha is a dark, absurd comedy about a secluded village in Central Asia desperate to explore a new world while clutching tightly to the past.

CONTENT NOTICE

Please be advised that this production contains depictions of physical and sexual violence, references to sexual assault and kidnapping, as well as portrayals of animal cruelty and explicit language.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

In Face of Challenge, Change and Chaos:

When 18th-century Korean philosopher Yeon-Ahm first wrote The Diary of Yeolha, which this play is based upon, he was driven by a desire for change and innovation to modernize his contemporary Joseon dynasty. Frustrated by Joseon’s closed attitude toward foreign culture and inventions, he marveled at the new ideas and advancements he encountered during his travels to Qing China. Yeon-Ahm believed that embracing change—not just in how we live, but in how we think—was essential for progress.

In the past few years, we too have faced profound shifts that have challenged long standing social and cultural norms. The collective experience of the global pandemic reshaped our way of life, imposing new social standards. The ever-changing political landscape has left many feeling as though the world has turned upside down, which feels familiar yet unfamiliar and even surreal. In many ways, our present moment feels chaotic, as if history is echoing some of its most troubling patterns.

In Inching Towards Yeolha, you will witness how the villagers of Yeolha respond to the absurd disruptions brought by outsiders seeking to stir chaos—only to find themselves instinctively and immediately restoring balance in their own way. This play invites us to reflect on our own attitudes toward change, both in the world of the play and in the one we live in today. As you leave the theater, I hope you question what, if any, has changed. And I hope you recognize the frustration and hope in the infinite possibilities that emerge from uncertainty.

By experiencing how the villagers of Yeolha confront upheaval, may we find the courage to meet our own moments of crisis with composure and compassion. And rather than resist the chaos, may we stay within it just long enough to see the opportunities it holds—to dream and shape a better world for tomorrow.

– Ji Won Jeon, Director

DRAMATURGS' NOTE

Written by playwright Sam-Shik Pai, Inching Towards Yeolha is a fascinating recreation of information documented in the diary of Park Ji Won, an iconic Korean philosopher who lived from 1737 to 1805. Park Ji Won also adopted the pseudonym Yeon-Ahm, allegedly after he had spent a time of reflective solitude in a valley called Yeon-Ahm in modern-day North Korea. This is important since the events in Inching Towards Yeolha are narrated through the character Yeon-Ahm.

The play is set in the wasteland village of Yeolha where the inhabitants live in extreme isolation and cling tightly to ancestral traditions. Their stagnant lifestyle is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious “four-legged beast,” Yeon-Ahm, who speaks of the need for Yeolha to make progress by connecting to a more innovative outside world. The beast’s suggestion causes turmoil and anxiety among the villagers who grapple with the tension between their old ways and the potential for change.

Yeon-Ahm ultimately functions as both the “four-legged-beast” of the play and a depiction of the real-life journey of Park Ji Won who sought to modernize Korean society by championing new ideas and tapping from foreign ideological systems. She is therefore an allegorical figure representing new perspectives that challenge the village’s desolate lifestyle. Inching Towards Yeolha ultimately explores the fears and resistance that arise when a community steeped in rigid customs is forced to confront unfamiliar practices and aspirations from the outside world.
