We collectively acknowledge that Michigan State University occupies the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary Lands of the Anishinaabeg – Three Fires Confederacy of Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi peoples. In particular, the University resides on Land ceded in the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw. We recognize, support, and advocate for the sovereignty of Michigan’s twelve federally-recognized Indian nations, for historic Indigenous communities in Michigan, for Indigenous individuals and communities who live here now, and for those who were forcibly removed from their Homelands. By offering this Land Acknowledgement, we affirm Indigenous sovereignty and will work to hold Michigan State University more accountable to the needs of American Indian and Indigenous peoples.

Charlotte’s Web is about the quiet miracle of friendship. It shows us how to accept one another’s differences, work together, and celebrate each other’s accomplishments. The friends at Zuckerman’s farm certainly do not always agree or get along, but, as Charlotte reminds us, having a friend is a “tremendous thing” and helping a friend “lifts up” our lives. I hope that this production lifts you up as much as collaborating with students and colleagues to bring the story to life has been a tremendous thing for me.
Dr. Ann Folino White, Director
Salutations!
We are so excited to share our production of Charlotte’s Web with you. Charlotte’s Web, set in the mid-20th century, was the second children’s book written by E.B. White (the first being Stuart Little) and, in many ways, it is an ode to his love for and kinship with animals and the peace offered by the company of nature. As a young boy, White spent much of his young life at the barn and with barnyard animals, and animals remained his preferred companions through adulthood.
When questioned about how he approaches writing for children in “The Art of the Essay,” Write shared that writing for children requires authors to write up, not down, and that anyone who does otherwise is wasting their time. White declared, “Children are demanding. They are the most attentive, curious, eager, observant, sensitive, quick, and generally congenial readers on earth. They accept, almost without question, anything you present them with, as long as it is presented honestly, fearlessly, and clearly.”
In the decades leading up to the time our production takes place, Americans were recovering from the Great Depression (1929-1939) and coming out of World War II (1941-1945). The impact of these two historical events led to an increased focus on community and a growing sentimentality toward rural/small-town life. These values can be seen at the heart of Charlotte’s Web, scaffolding central themes like the beauty that exists in the passing of time, cycles of life and death, and, of course, the importance of friendship and community.
