DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to our production of Just Cause and Waiting for Lefty.  As MSU recently agreed to a significant unionization effort for tenure stream faculty, and amidst the nationwide surge of organizing efforts, the timing is perfect to revisit Clifford Odets’ classic play.

The Storefront series, dedicated to providing unique acting opportunities, presents this classic text originally written for The Group Theatre. Home to some of the most renowned acting methodologists of the twentieth century, this play resonates deeply with the spirit of collective unity and the shared responsibility inherent in unionization.

Just Cause, is a documentary piece crafted from original interviews I conducted and public speeches. It is an exploration of current perspectives from female-identifying individuals regarding recent strikes, organizing efforts, and anti-union sentiments. A special thanks to Ava Ballagh for her deep contribution to this new piece. This piece was shaped through her excellent eye for detail.

The actors are cast in two roles for Lefty. Upon receiving their “timecard” at the start of Waiting for Lefty, they discover which role they will portray for the evening. This process embodies the collective unity and the equitable distribution of responsibilities that a union signifies—a concept close to my heart as a former National Education and Outreach Coordinator for Actors’ Equity Association.

Our students have actively engaged with the themes of unions, with guests Lisa Fine and John Beck (history and labor relations), participating in performances at UAW 206, and hosting a special event for the Michigan Education Association and the Organizing Committee for MSU Union of Tenure System Faculty This experience has enriched their understanding and connection to the broader labor movement which will be part of post-show discussions in Room 10 after the show.

We invite you to join us in an exploration of labor, solidarity, and the power of collective action.

DRAMATURG’S NOTE

The United States was in a period of radical change in the 1930s. In New York City, where Waiting for Lefty by Clifford Odets is set, the cab driver experience was not untouched by a. Throughout the late 1800s New York City expanded quickly, as industrialization and urbanization brought new jobs and even entire new sectors for people to fill. This gave way to high levels of immigration, job migration, and the need for cab drivers to accommodate this level of expansion. Yet, the Great Depression from 1929 to 1939 grinds the gears on many of these progressions to a halt.

During the Great Depression, the power of the average person to have leverage in their job for fair wages, better work conditions, and job security was severely diluted. While unions had existed over a hundred years before the Depression, the Depression gave way to their re-emergence. Whether it was to fight corporate greed, unsafe and often unhealthy working conditions, or lessening wages, both men and women, of many different ethnicities and races, formed labor unions. It is true that many of these unions move the needle very little, but groups that found success usually found major success. This period saw the birth of the modern 5-day work week and the 8-hour weekday, as well as the eventual downfall of sweatshop labor in the United States

The power echoes a movement today from Lyft and Uber drivers, New York City cab drivers, and many other service-based workers who find themselves in another wave of an age-old fight.

-Basil Rae (she/they)
