We collectively acknowledge that Michigan State University occupies the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary Lands of the Anishinaabeg – Three Fires Confederacy of Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi peoples. In particular, the University resides on Land ceded in the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw. We recognize, support, and advocate for the sovereignty of Michigan’s twelve federally-recognized Indian nations, for historic Indigenous communities in Michigan, for Indigenous individuals and communities who live here now, and for those who were forcibly removed from their Homelands. By offering this Land Acknowledgement, we affirm Indigenous sovereignty and will work to hold Michigan State University more accountable to the needs of American Indian and Indigenous peoples.

This season is all about Community. When I first started working on this show, I had no idea how deeply this season’s theme would resonate with this production. I found myself discovering a departmental Community of inspiring creative spirit in this amazing cast and incredibly talented production team. I found myself connecting more deeply with the broader MSU Community through a collaboration with the Composition program faculty and students. Beyond the connections on this campus, this team found ourselves connecting with the deeply passionate Community of roller derby right here in our backyard, with the Lansing Roller Derby team, who graciously shared both their expertise and their avid love for this sport.
The derby bouts may be imaginary in this show, but the passionate support for Community and the individuals that make it come to life is all real. In a post-covid world, it’s been lovely to create a story about empowered women and non-binary characters, and witness those within these marginalized Communities seek and fight for what gratifies them and makes them come to life.
This show contains so many things that bring me joy as creator and person; silly puns, creative movement techniques, and empowered “geekiness”. I hope this show inspires you reconnect with what things bring you joy as well. Let the bout begin.
Alexis Black, Director
On the surface, the world of roller derby doesn’t seem like it needs the research and background knowledge that other shows may need. From first-hand experience, I can tell you that that isn’t true in the slightest. Especially as it relates to the LGBTQIA2S+ community, the world of roller derby has a rich and deep history, one that even my months of research cannot appreciate fully. Roller derby remains a women-run space, one of very few in our society. Despite the physical danger inherent in a high-speed contact sport, roller derby offers a remarkably safe and inclusive space for women-loving-women. The show highlights this fact and even shows the negative aspects of a queer relationship in a real and honest way. Joy also marks her growth and change as an individual through the choice of a new name and a tattoo.
Like the LGBTQIA2S+ community, the roller derby community allows for the possibility of a chosen family. Joy Ride and the rest of her team are like a family by the end of For the Love of, or the Roller Derby Play. The characters struggle separately in their jobs and lives, through love and loss, fighting and making up, but most importantly they come together through roller derby.
