DIRECTOR’S NOTE

In considering the considerable, consequential, crucial, contributions of Clue to the art of the board game—Nay; to the art of storytelling spanning several silos of significant media—Double Nay Nay; to annals of human history—One must acknowledge that we have all felt its immense impact in immeasurable ways. From our first family game night, flipping the board in a fit of rage—how could it have been Mustard in the Billiard Room with the Candlestick???!– to our impromptu intensive viewing of Tim Curry’s entire filmography— to our obligatory outing of cousin Jessica’s high school production of the play of the same name—we have all felt Clue with us as surely as the setting sun. Tonight, we add another chapter to the catalog of Clue. Not Clue as you’ve played it in days past, or Clue as you’ve seen it ‘pon the silver screen, but Clue. Live. On-stage. Performed for you by actual actors acting. We invite you, this very evening, to sit back and watch ridiculous humans acting ridiculously, and perhaps to reflect on the ridiculous nature of our own ridiculous lives. To ask ourselves, am I a Peacock? A Green or Scarlett?? A White, Mustard, or Plum??? A Wadsworth, perhaps… Well, tonight it is you, in the theatre, with a play. {exeunt. fin.}

— Ryan Patrick Welsh
Director, Tabletop Gamer, Ridiculous Human.

DRAMATURG’S NOTE

From the rise of the dinner club “Murder Mystery nights” to a best-selling game that has taken millions of households by storm, Clue offers a playful adaptation of source material that feels just familiar enough without feeling like you’re sitting through something you’ve already experienced. This farce/comedy/mystery asks you to remember the world with child-like wonder, featuring physical comedy and silly approaches to the slightly upside-down, yet semi-historical world it brings you into. Based on director Jonathan Lynn’s campy 1985 film that has become a cult classic, this stage version dials up the farce and incorporates further imagery from the board game.

The show is set in 1954, at the height of McCarthyism and the Red Scare. While Red Scare might sound like a fan club for Miss Scarlet, this term refers to a time in the beginning of the Cold War when the United States was terrified of communism taking over. Joseph R. McCarthy was a Republican United State Senator who birthed a second wave of the Red Scare that came to be known as McCarthyism. Alongside HUAC (the House Un-American Activities Committee), Senator McCarthy asked Americans to turn in their neighbors for the mere suspicion of communism. Inside these walls of Clue, we see a similar suspicion of neighbor vs neighbor, as everyone is so quick to blame the person next to them in order to avoid taking on blame themselves. This play, therefore, can be interpreted as representing a time in American history where brotherhood was replaced with cut-throat suspicion.

While Clue is set in an undetermined area around Washington DC, it has become a global success, reaching over 3,000 world-wide productions ranging from high school theatre to this production here at Michigan State University. With themes of friendship, distrust, and yes, murder, audiences everywhere are on the edges of their seats asking if they could be next.

-Bee Rose
