A darkly comic adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In Victorian England, repressed impulses burst as Dr. Jekyll’s experiments in the nature of evil threaten to reveal the bloody hands beneath the gloves of the British Empire. A fast-paced romp about people tightrope-walking the line between aristocracy and depravity, and between the twin specters of good and evil.
As you might notice, there’s a noticeable void where a long list of designers would normally appear in the program. That absence is intentional. One of the Storefront’s guiding principles is to create theatre on a shoestring—without designers, without spectacle—focusing instead on the actor, the story, and the shared imagination between audience and performer.
Every costume, prop, and set piece you see tonight was sourced by our ensemble from their own homes or from our second home here in the Auditorium. The lighting is adjusted only as needed, and sound cues have been found, borrowed, and gently manipulated to serve our version of the play. Very little was purchased or built, but everything has been crafted with care. The simplicity keeps the acting—and this wonderfully twisted script—at the center.
Originally selected for the 2020 Summer Circle Theatre season (cue ominous duh-duh-DUH!), this show has been patiently waiting on my shelf ever since. The Storefront felt like the perfect place to finally unleash it.
We hope you enjoy this revisionist romp through Jekyll and Hyde—a little satire, a little madness, and a whole lot of laughter. Thanks and enjoy
