SUMMARY

Amidst the chaos of war, Virginia has left home to become a Woman Airforce Service Pilot during World War II. As she faces a pivotal decision that will change her life forever, Decision Height tells an unforgettable story of bravery, sacrifice, and sisterhood, shining light on a courageous group of unrecognized American Heroes.

RUN TIME

1 hour, 35 minutes (10 minute intermission)

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Decision Height is a story of courage, sacrifice, and sisterhood. Meredith Dayna Levy’s beautiful words bring to life the journey of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II. These women, who traveled to join the Airforce from all corners of the United States, defied expectations, risked everything, and helped shape history. Their bravery went unrecognized for far too long, but their legacy lives on.

As we tell this story, we also acknowledge those who were denied the opportunity to serve. Women of color, despite their patriotism and desire to contribute, faced systemic barriers that kept all but five from joining the WASP program. We honor not only the women who took to the skies but also those who fought simply for the chance to do so. Their determination and resilience should not be forgotten.

This play reminds us that history has a way of repeating itself. The fight against oppression, fascism, and injustice did not end with World War II. The same ideals these women stood for—freedom, equality, and democracy—are being tested once again in today’s political landscape. As we witness rising threats to these principles, Decision Height challenges us to ask: How do we honor the sacrifices of those who came before us? and What are we willing to stand for as our future unfolds?

Tonight, we celebrate the courage of these women and reaffirm our commitment to the values they upheld. May their strength inspire us to face our own battles with the same tenacity and heart.

– Alexis Black and Rileigh Belle Wine, Director and Assistant Director

DRAMATURGY NOTE

Decision Height follows a group of women who are training to be WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots). Throughout the show we see these young women grow as a group with a shared goal of doing their part to assist in the war effort and making the most out of this (at the time) once in a lifetime opportunity. This production is not just about women pilots, it is about ambition, resilience in the face of adversity, and striving for a place at the table that women are still having to fight for. This play gives recognition to the women who were instrumental in the war effort but were overlooked for decades, even after receiving WW2 Victory Medals in 1984 and being awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009 by President Obama.

Allow me to set the scene… the WASPs trained all across the country, but Avenger Field, located in Sweetwater, Texas was the main training location, and it is also the setting of the play. The WASPs had to wear men’s “zoot suits” which were flight jumpsuits that were huge on the WASPs. The women also had to wear a “flight turban” to keep their hair out of the way, similar to the Rosie the Riveter poster. During their training and after they graduated from flight school the WASPs flew every type of aircraft used in WW2 from lightweight trainers to the aircraft that dropped the nuclear bombs.

Despite their training with these planes, the WASPs never saw combat. Instead, they were in charge of ferrying planes from the factories to training bases, testing planes and weaponry, and instructing male cadets so their male counterparts could fight overseas. Though the WASPs never saw combat, 38 women died in their time as a WASP.

This play and our performance of it means to honor the WASPs and all of their accomplishments, but also recognize the sacrifices made in their service. Both of which are not acknowledged enough, especially given the current administration’s attempts to remove the WASPs historical impact from government resources, their contributions cannot be minimized or forgotten. Enjoy the show!
