DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Dear friends and theatergoers,

It is with great pleasure that we present to you “Bright Star,” a musical that takes us on a poignant journey through the complexities of love, heartbreak, and redemption in the American South.

As a director, I was immediately drawn to the show’s themes of resilience and hope, and the way in which they are conveyed through the story’s stunning score. Written by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, the music effortlessly captures the essence of the time period and adds a unique layer of emotion and depth to the characters’ experiences.

Our creative team, cast and crew have put countless hours into bringing this production to life, working tirelessly to create a world that is both authentic and meaningful. We have strived to stay true to the spirit of the original material, while also bringing our own interpretation and vision to the stage.

Ultimately, “Bright Star” is a story that reminds us of the power of perseverance and the light that can emerge from even the darkest of times. We hope that this production will resonate with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, and that it will leave you feeling inspired and uplifted.

I wanted to say a personal thank you to my team, specifically the wonderful seniors who will be graduating soon.  It is always a rough time for me to say goodbye to these wonderful artists and technicians.  We will all miss you.  As always, thank you Natalie for letting me share my time with the theatre.  Dave, you had my back more times than I can count and Sloan, I promise I won’t cry when you graduate… Rachel, Reese, Jen, Alexis, Lili, Mona, Jordan, Lucas, Leroy, Abbie, Ally, Rachel, Abby, Renee , Kat, Melina, Levi, and many MANY others…  Thanks for bringing such a positive environment to our show.

I hope you enjoy the show!

Cheers,
Brad Willcuts
@willcutsbrad

DRAMATURG’S NOTE

As the final production in the Department of Theatre’s 2022-2023 season exploring the theme of community, “Bright Star” offers a hopeful story about overcoming exclusionary dynamics to build community through creativity and kindness. Taking inspiration from the 1902 Missouri-based legend of the Iron Mountain Baby, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell have relocated the narrative to North Carolina in 1923-1924 and 1945-1946. In the later timeline, Billy Cane returns home from his tour of duty in World War II and pursues his dream of making a career as a writer. Twenty-two years earlier, Alice Murphy begins a parallel journey in Zebulon, a small town with “a thousand eyes and one tiny mind.” When Alice becomes an obstacle to the business ambitions of the closed-minded Mayor Dobbs, she experiences a painful separation from her family and her community.

Still, Alice perseveres through a college education in Chapel Hill, ultimately playing an important role in the Southern literary Renaissance she had envisioned in her youth. As editor of the (fictional) Asheville Southern Journal, she helps to shape the writing of authors such as Tom Wolfe, Tennessee Williams, Carson McCullers, and Eudora Welty. Alice’s decision to mentor Billy Cane represents an invitation into the intellectual and artistic community she has created. Their connection sets a new journey in motion, as a shadowy truth emerges to demonstrate how “trouble and happiness walk hand in hand.”

SPECIAL THANKS

Thank you to all the people who helped make this production come to life.  From the creative team to the administration to the staff to the community, we all are very appreciative of your efforts to keep this story in your hearts and available for an audience.  Thanks to Stephen DiBenedetto, Eric Olmscheid, Joe Barros, Hannah Elles, Tina Newhauser, The Selmeyers, The Whites, and The Wendelbergers.
