Post-Show Discussion with Guest Directors, Writers, and Actors following EACH performance.
The performance runs approximately 2 hours with one 15 minute intermission.
Where do stories come from? By all accounts, Emily Brontë was a homebody, content to keep the company of her sisters, her fantasy worlds, and nature, rather than seek romantic love. She rarely left the parsonage where she grew up and died of tuberculosis at the age of 30. Yet despite having seen so little of the world, she was able to craft one of the greatest and most enduring melodramas that exists in the English literary canon: Wuthering Heights.
Emily shamelessly embraced messiness and imperfection in her work, and that is something we are deeply inspired by as artists. The show celebrates the power of creativity, the sacrifices of an artistic life, especially as a woman in the 1800s, and the joys of sisterhood and collaboration.
What a gift to begin to see the show take on a life of its own here at īMáGen at MSU! We felt so supported by the amazing team who constantly rolled with our never-ending requests, printing script pages, sourcing props, compiling research, and working around the clock to make this staging happen! This opportunity to freely explore what this show could be is the kind of thing theatre-makers dream of, and we are forever thankful.
-Jessy and Susanna
During this musical, we also get a vision into the struggles of Emily’s sisters, Charlotte and Anne, as they too set out to be published authors. The audience is witnessing two stories at once, one of Emily’s real life, and one of the lives within her head, and how those two tended to blend into one another. The audience should walk away feeling a lot of differing emotions that blend and conflict with each other- much like the characters do in Emily’s story. As the audience leaves the theater, they should feel a connection to three sisters who, due to prejudice and hate, were forced into secrecy for their work, all while having the dream that the world is able to hear their words.
