New York City is one of the greatest cities in the world and is widely viewed as a key center of arts and culture. Students in this program will explore and respond to the myriad cultural experiences that New York has to offer--including diverse cultural performances, landmarks, museums, and excursions. The program will include focused study of music, art, film (including television), creative writing, theatre, and dance. Conventional classroom study will be richly augmented with a wide variety of field trips, instructional tours, live performances, and other active learning experiences. Students will have some free time to visit sights of their choice as well.
Students are required to enroll in a minimum of eight (8) credits from the following course offerings:
All off-campus classes are taught by two MSU Theatre professors: Rob Roznowski (Head of Acting/Directing) and Kirk Domer (Head of Design) from the Department of Theatre
Space in this program is limited. At a minimum, students must be in good academic standing (a grade point average of at least 2.0) and have a record of good conduct at MSU. The ideal candidate will have completed at least one full year of study on campus and the Tier One writing requirement before departure. Students majoring in Theatre, English, WRAC or the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities are encouraged to apply; other MSU students will be accepted if space permits.
Students will live in International House in an attractive, historic area of upper Manhattan for the duration of the program. This is a modern student housing facility that attracts students from all over the world. Students will be assigned to private furnished rooms, with internet access.
International House: Convenient community bathrooms on each floor offer private showers and dressing areas, and coin-operated laundry facilities are in the basement. The program fee includes some meal credit for the International House dining room, which will cover the cost of daily breakfasts (or occasional dinners) in the hall; students may purchase additional meal credit upon arrival if desired.
International House is adjacent to a major park and convenient to subway and bus lines, making all the attractions of Manhattan just minutes away. It is also within walking distance of other major schools, including Columbia University, Union Theological Seminary, and the Manhattan School of Music. The estimated program fee will be $2350-2500; a precise fee will be provided upon acceptance to the program. This fee covers housing in New York City, including $120 meal credit per student and the facility’s technology fee; pre-departure orientation; and all required field trips, admissions, and tickets to performances.
In addition, participants will be required to purchase a one-month Metro Card for unlimited use of mass transit (bus/subway lines); these can be purchased in any subway station using cash or credit card ($76).
